You can see the transition here, which is just north beyond where 48th street turns left. The wierd edge stripe (it's basically just barely to the left of the gutter pan joint) was painted after a REALLY BAD plan to create a sub-standard bike lane (perhaps 3' total width) was quashed (see email archives: July 9, 2008, and then follow up confirming no further work anticipated in Oct 27, which was just after the gutter-aligned edgeline was painted). Ultimately this strech of road terminates at a traffic circle (roundabout?) where it rejoins 48th Street. There was some attempt (back in the timeframe when the circle was constructed) to mark this as a bike lane, Some diamond ground markings were initially painted (you can still see where diamond were marked and then quickly intentionally obliterated). In any event cyclists in this stretch tend to ride on the wide (perhaps 10') shoulder. I believe (but don't know the details) that this was part of a deal worked out between the Pointe HOA and City of Phoenix. That's Camelback Mountain in the background. there is or may be a bike lane on the private section but it hardly matters as this part functions as a residential street. IIRC the gate was placed more or less at the same time as the circle (48th street/Pointe Parkway, which is privately maintained) was constructed; which i'm thinking was something like 2002.
